Safety is Not Optional

Working with electronics carries inherent risks. Following these guidelines protects you, your equipment, and others around you.

Electrical Safety

ESD Protection

  • Always use anti-static wrist straps when handling components
  • Touch grounded metal before handling sensitive electronics
  • Store components in anti-static bags
  • Work on anti-static mats when possible
SA Suppliers: Anti-static wrist straps available from Communica (~R50), RS Components (~R75)

Power Supply Safety

  • Use proper voltage ratings (5V for Arduino UNO R4)
  • Never exceed current ratings
  • Disconnect power before making circuit changes
  • Use surge protectors due to SA power instability
SA Context: Load shedding and power fluctuations can damage sensitive electronics

Emergency Procedures

Electrical Shock

  1. Turn off power source immediately
  2. Do not touch the person if still connected
  3. Call emergency services: 10177
  4. Apply first aid if trained

Component Fire

  1. Disconnect power if safely possible
  2. Use CO2 extinguisher (never water on electronics)
  3. Evacuate area if fire spreads
  4. Call fire department: 10177
