Safety is Not Optional
Working with electronics carries inherent risks. Following these guidelines protects you, your equipment, and others around you.
Electrical Safety
ESD Protection
- Always use anti-static wrist straps when handling components
- Touch grounded metal before handling sensitive electronics
- Store components in anti-static bags
- Work on anti-static mats when possible
SA Suppliers: Anti-static wrist straps available from Communica (~R50), RS Components (~R75)
Power Supply Safety
- Use proper voltage ratings (5V for Arduino UNO R4)
- Never exceed current ratings
- Disconnect power before making circuit changes
- Use surge protectors due to SA power instability
SA Context: Load shedding and power fluctuations can damage sensitive electronics
Emergency Procedures
Electrical Shock
- Turn off power source immediately
- Do not touch the person if still connected
- Call emergency services: 10177
- Apply first aid if trained
Component Fire
- Disconnect power if safely possible
- Use CO2 extinguisher (never water on electronics)
- Evacuate area if fire spreads
- Call fire department: 10177
